Military Grade Sights and Scopes: Not Just For Police and Movie Heroes Anymore

For the average hunter and sportsman, a scope is a scope is a scope. That’s not to say there aren’t differences in the quality and effectiveness of just about every scope on the market. There is a big difference in quality between the bottom of the barrel entry level scopes and the top of the line considerably more expensive scopes on the market. And a number of aspects go into what constitutes a quality scope, each playing an important role in how well that scope functions. But for most hunters and sportsman, looking through any given scope mounted to their favorite gun gives just about the same visual experience each time.

It seems like its only real life SWAT teams and movie star heroes that have a completely different sighting experience. In the movies, heroes always have top of the line tactical scopes mounted to incredible sniper rifles able to shoot a hole through a dime from 2 miles away. And when they show the point of view of the shooter, it’s never anything like you’ve seen when sighting in on a deer or elk.

That’s because a sniper scope is very different from a traditional rifle scope. Originally developed for military and police sharpshooters, sniper scopes contain a wide array of features and adjustments not found (at least on the surface) on their traditional counterparts. Perhaps the two most noticeable differences between a tactical scope and a standard scope is the mil-dot sighting system calculated in MOA and the external zero knobs used to help dial in accuracy on the fly. Using a sniper scope requires a familiarity with ballistics, particularly minutes of angle as each dot displayed on a tactical sniper scope is calculated in MOA and each click of the sighting knobs adjusts the same.

But for those with a firm understanding of ballistics, a tactical scope can provide a number of advantages when target shooting or hunting. Shots from tactical scopes are able to be much more exact which can mean all the difference between taking down that trophy buck at 700 yards and missing out altogether. Because of this advantage in accuracy many hunters and sportsmen are beginning to equip their rifles with sniper and tactical scopes each year.

Other military designed sights that are making their way to the civilian market are laser sights. Laser sights are popular because they are simple to mount and even simpler to use. In order to deliver deadly accurate close range shots all a shooter needs to do is point and line up the red dot which appears on the target. This simple and easy process for close range firing makes laser sights especially optimal solutions for small arms and pistols. Using a laser sight system just about everyone can hit their target from inside 50 yards which means fewer stray bullets and less chance for missed shots.

As technology in the firearms field advances you’re sure to see more and more military grade products become available for civilian use. Thanks to the advances in sights and scopes, some civilian designed and manufactured weapon sights are even out performing their military counterparts. Thanks to these technological breakthroughs many historically guarded military specification equipment is leaping out from behind police and military safeguard and off the silver screen into the hands of avid hunters and sportsmen all over the world. If it’s time for you to replace that old scope on your rifle, you might just want to consider installing a brand new tactical scope for more accuracy and control before your next hunt.
